At about 50 km north of our hotel there is Rome, reachable through a fast road which represents the main tourist goal for the hotel guests. It is often quicker to reach the Rome city centre from Gabriele Hotel than from some areas in Rome itself, with the advantage to sleep on the seashore, cherished by the wave sound, without the wearing out of traffic and city chaos.
The environs of Latina are all a series of mountainous and sea villages which , also thanks to the numerous local festivals and commemorative events, attract tourists from all the world.
The museum of Piana delle Orme undoubtedly deserves a visit . The site is divided into two main parts for a total of 11 theme pavilions.A sector regards the epoch toy and the life in the fields and the rural civilization, the reclamation of the Pontine marshes and the colonization of the Pontine field. The other sector recalls the deeds of World War II starting from the entry of Italy into the conflict, with plenty of war finds displayed (about 50,000). The exhibition complex is entirely surrounded by green areas where benches, tables and gazeboes have been placed in order to make the relax-break more pleasant in the shade of the manifold kinds of eucalyptus.
At about 20 minutes drive from our hotel, making for the Lepini Mountains , you see a series of small villages ,each of which deserves a break for its visit: Sermoneta, one of the the Medieval best-preserved centres in Lazio, Ninfa with its botanical garden among the most beautiful ones in Europe, Norma, well-known among the lovers of slope-soaring, Bassiano and its “ famous doc ham”, Maenza, the town of St. Thomas D’Aquino, Cori, well-known for gastronomy and cuisine, Sezze, famous for the “artichokes without thorns” and finally Fossanova, which practically preserves intact a 1208 abbey that can be considered as the first example of Italian Cistercian architecture.

On the way southwards, following the coast road of the famous “ Riviera di Ulisse”, at just 12 km you can see Sabaudia, licked up by the National Park of the Circeo, divided between the sea and the lake and summer goal of many VIPs.
Coasting along the sea you arrive at Circeo, the so-called “sitting –room of Rome VIPs”, well-known for ages. It is the place where Sorceress Circe deceived Ulysses and the site where the rests of the man of Neandhertal were found. Continuing along the coast you finally reach “historical” Terracina , splendid bathing centre born before Rome . It is called the “Door of the sun” and all you have to do is leave the car to find yourself absorbed in history. The ancient part of the town is an open-air monument that culminates in the “Tempio di Giove Anxur”, the ancient acropolis situated on the top of Mount St. Angelo, from which you can enjoy a breat-taking sight that embraces the whole gulf and the Pontine Islands , and the pearls of Ischia and Capri on particularly serene days. |
